The Association of Global Automakers and Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers are considering a possible merger that would bring together the auto lobby under a single roof, both groups recently confirmed.
Global Automakers is an $11 million-revenue association representing international automobile manufacturers. The Auto Alliance is a $33 million-revenue group presenting companies that build automobiles in the U.S. The latter at one time represented only domestic manufacturers but now has several foreign members who build vehicles in U.S. plants.
Few details about the possible merger were available at press time. In a joint statement to Politico Pro, the CEOs of the two associations said achieving the promise of innovative new vehicles "will require robust public policy and stronger partnerships with policymakers and stakeholders."
"To accelerate this effort, the Auto Alliance and Global Automakers are exploring the potential for uniting the associations in pursuit of the next generation of mobility while continuing to provide consumers with safer, more energy-efficient vehicles," they said.
John Bozzella is the current CEO of Global Automakers. Dave Schwietert is interim CEO of the Auto Alliance, having taken over following the departure of CEO Mitch Bainwol in February.
